The Culture of Disrespect for Life

on July 25, 2006

I had written about this in my first blog, Prudence, but so much of what goes on in our lives I think is touched by this thing I call the Culture of Disrespect for Life that it is worth revisiting.

The Culture of Disrespect for Life is not just about abortion. It is about how we treat fellow human beings. Its also about how we respect our own selves. Suicide for example is a great disrespect for life. So is indulging in things simply for our own pleasure when it hurts others.

Abortion of course is a classic case of putting ones own life and happiness ahead of another’s. I think it is the most selfish thing a person can do. Unless having a baby would actually kill the mother (in which case abortion would be like self-defense) then I cannot see how we allow as a society the justification that one life should be ended simply for the benefit or convenience of another’s. And yet more people than not think its okay, and some defend its practice with great gusto. It really depresses me when I think of that.

Using embryos for scientific studies when they don’t have to I also think shows how easily we will abuse another’s life using the justification that the sacrifice of one can help many. Even if this is true, we are in effect saying that one’s life is not worth our respect, or not worth the chance to live. Maybe that embryo had it been able to live could have become the greatest scientist, or peacemaker, or leader the world has ever known and had a positive effect on even more people’s lives. But instead that life was never even given the chance. And couples who make extra embryos who know they might be thrown out are again putting their own desires for having a baby ahead of the lives of those extra embryos.

I think the force behind the Culture of Disrespect for Life is the devil. It is because the devil knows that when we do things for our convenience, to please ourselves, or to devalue human life, we are mocking the very teaching of Jesus. His message is simple, love one another. When we only look inward and think of ourselves, it is impossible to truly live how Jesus would want us to.

Seems to me that the devil’s plan is working.
