Five Ft. Three

With freedom comes responsibility

on June 21, 2008

Over at Patrick’s blog, a discussion about the people in New Orleans that decided not to evacuate for Katrina has created a bit of a stir, because I expect some personal responsibility from people. Is this a terrible concept? I don’t think so. I think we take our freedoms for granted anymore, and many Americans think that freedom means they don’t have to even take responsibility for their own lives and property. This of course is totally wrong, our Constitution gives us freedoms, but was not designed to provide for our every need!

I am compassionate for those physically unable to help themselves, and it’s because of them that people who were able and chose not to anger me, because resources that should have been used to help the truly needy then had to also be allocated to those who shouldn’t have needed it. And it all comes down to some not taking responsibility that they should have.
