Obama – “buying” more votes

on May 9, 2012

It’s not like he’s going to get any conservatives to vote for him, and so he changes his mind on gay marriage to get their vote.  How pathetic!

Beth, why is everything President Obama does political? Is there any chance he did this because he believes it was the best thing to do, or the right thing?

Certainly one could argue politics on the timing, but the issue?

Should we just assume all decisions made by all presidents are political if they satisfy a certain part of the electorate, or just those by Pres. Obama?

  2. Z-man says:

His doing this at this time Dave flies in the face of conventional political wisdom. He seems to have written off conservatives entirely, doesn’t even care to reach out to them anymore not that he ever did and with a slight majority of Americans now self-identifying themselves as conservative this strikes me as polarizing and divisive, hardly moderate.

  3. Beth says:

Dave, call my cynical if you want, but seriously when the economy is in the tank, he keeps bringing up social issues to stir the pot so that his actual record on the economy is overshadowed. Just my take.

  4. I don’t think this “buys” him anything. He will “gain” the liberal votes, that he probably already had, “lose” the conservative votes he never would get, and most moderates are probably evenly divided on the issue.

IMHO this “issue” shouldn’t even be part of the political discussion but it is – mostly because of the media. However, kudos to him for actually taking a stand on something.

His hand was forced by Biden’s comments the week earlier.

    • Beth says:

Did you feel the same way when President Bush took a stand against gay marriage?

I know I am cynical, but I believe this was a highly orchestrated event.

      • Actually, yes I did. I respected him for stating a direct opinion and making a statement regarding his (and his administrations position – even if you believe the press now that states many of his administration have since made statements to the contrary). I also felt that this issue is a non – political issue.

And yes, I could be convinced that this was an orchestrated event, but not to sway any votes or voters, but rather because of Biden’s running off of the mouth. If it were to “buy” votes, he would have come out with this long before recent votes by states like NC and win over presidential voters and support.

  5. Z-man says:

Beth you hit it. You’d think his primary focus would be the economy. If you wanted to add a second very important focus it would be foreign policy but gay marriage? I mean it’s one thing if he were a rousing success on the economy and had time to tinker around but there’s gotta be a reason for this one.

  6. Z-man says:

His liberal condescension towards gays just to get their votes.

  7. Beth says:

Well the fact that there was a “news” story like the next day after Obama evolved to his pro-gay stance that suggested Romney was anti-gay because of something he did 50 years ago suggest it was an orchestrated event. That “news” story was waiting on the shelf for after Obama’s revelation. Maybe Biden’s big mouth changes the timing of when they were going to do this little one, two punch, but mark my word, it was all planned.
