News flash – Murder is illegal

on July 25, 2012

So if murder is illegal, then nobody does it, right?  What?  No, you mean making something illegal doesn’t stop people from committing crimes?  But surely if we made owning a gun illegal, people would pay attention to that law and be upstanding citizens and the world would be a safer place, right?

You are right, unfortunately. Yet…the rather constant issue of mass shootings deserves some attention, whether it be our culture (violent vid games, etc), failure to intervene in the case of
of unstable folk (can’t be charged for threats) and the overall love affair we have with our guns.
I know of an instance where a felon was prohibited from buy weapons…so he made his girlfriend
buy them for him. (Imagine a young lady buying an assault weapon). He was constantly in trouble with the law…ultimately shot his girlfriend in the face, shot up the sheriff’s office, killed
a paster, a cop and some kid that ran out into the street with his own weapon. Frustrating, some
were worried….and rightly so, but what to do? On the other hand, I was in the ammunition industry for 25 years and knew many hundreds of legitimate gun owners..hunters, target shooters, collectors, and a few who considered them boytoys. And their worry was always
either making it harder for them to purchase, or that there would be confiscation…in fact,
gun sales always go up right after an incident like Aurora, or that school near you (both for
protection and the worry that some gun control law might pass).
So it goes on, we will continue to see crazed gunmen. Heck, even in peacefull Norway that guy killed a big bunch of students. I guess the question is: accept it
as inevitable, or get together with the professional law, the gunowners associations, perhaps
    the psychology types.
You are right, though. Were there no guns at all, there would be some that could make
bombs, use axes, whatever. It isn’t just we Americans…it is society…and its dark fringes.

I appreciate your well thought out response, BB. I agree that these sort of situations deserve attention in trying to figure out what to do to prevent them. That some of the past shooters recently have not killed themselves makes me think at least now doctors can try to talk to these guys and maybe they can figure out what makes them do the things they do. I mean, there are people dealing with disappointments all over the place, but we all don’t turn to this sort of violence as a reaction to it.

Criminals or in this case would be criminals are not going to obey any gun control laws we pass. I do support some gun control measures but I don’t get all jazzed up about them like the libs do. I do think though assault weapons need to be banned once and for all.

Indeed, there can be limits, it won’t stop all crazies but it could stop a few or at least don’t make it so easy for them. Still, there are no guarantees and guns are just one way to kill people.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Who knew a neuroscience major would go bonkers? If you can figure that out you’d be psychic.

  6. We’re having a gun-control discussion at my blog today. Perhaps you’ll stop by, Beth.

Thanks for joining in on the discussion!
